What is Glamping?
GLAMPING
What is glamping?
For those who love the outdoors, but can’t sacrifice the comforts of home (or have a spouse who can’t), there is glamping. The ‘Glamping’ concept has been gaining momentum overseas and now in Australia.
‘Glamping’, a mashup of the words “glamorous” and “camping”. Some call it glorious camping, boutique camping, or luxury camping.
Whatever the word composition, it should really be named “comfortable camping”, as glamping is the act of sleeping in nature with all the creature comforts of home.
This is a back-to-basics camping, the luxurious way.
The History of Glamping
The Turkish Ottomans would set up extravagant tent cities as a mobile palace for the sultan. These luxurious tents were complete with silk fabrics, embroidery, expensive rugs and furnishings*.
Fast forward to the early 1900’s in Africa. Wealthy American and European travelers demanded luxuries while on safari. They wanted to have a wild adventure outdoors, but didn’t want to part with their king sized beds and furniture. These canvas safari tents usually included nice Persian rugs, luxurious bedding, and a chef to prepare meals.
Modern day Glamping
So, when did this movement pick up in the modern day? According to Google Trends, the keyword first started being searched on Google in early 2007. The searches were most saturated in Ireland and the United Kingdom.
Today, in the United States, the west coast has the highest saturation of glamping searches, followed by Colorado, New York, the Great Lakes region, and the east coast.
The glamping movement is in it’s very early days here in Australia although certainly gaining momentum with existing vineyards, orchards, ranches, and other land-owners are capitalizing on the glamping movement by starting up glamping sites of their own.
Entrepreneurs in just about every state are taking on the trend, with prices ranging from $150 to $3,000 per night.
So, what are you waiting for? Be a part of the glamping movement and get out there and rough it ?
Or why not start a glamping business of your own?
Do you live in a beautiful area with limited properties available to rent?
Are there many weddings in your area and only old dated motels for guests to stay in?
Or perhaps you are an amazing stylist and can take the stress out of other people parties by offering a beautifully styled bell tent as a chill out area or as accomodation for the extra house guests?

Scarabeo Camp, Morocco
‘Elegant Simplicity’
“Perhaps the best way of describing Scarabeo Camp is [its] magic formula: a charming bivouac of oriental-inspired tents, following the rhythm of the seasons”—
Florence and Vincent
The Belgians made this simple style a champion of the camp’s location.
The design matches the landscape in tonal purity of the natural materials: white tents and bedding, caramel-leather chairs, travel artifacts, Moroccan lanterns, bleached-wood, woven floors mats, biscuit-coloured cushions…
This draws attention to what Stone Camp really is about: absorbing the place and experiencing the purity of the Moroccan desert life.
On the emotional level, the design creates a feeling of being part of an expedition from the golden age of explorers. It’s a trip to the simpler times… without leaving the comforts of modern life.
Stone Camp lets its guest fully experience the serenity and magic of camping in the desert. It’s all about the bonfires in the evening and the aroma of fresh bread carried in the cool air of early morning. It’s the imposing sight of the Atlas Mountain range and the white tents, tastefully decorated by the founders of Scarabeo.
Scarabeo Project was dreamt up by a couple from Belgium: Vincent T’Sas, a photographer and Florence Mottet who is a graphic designer. Their background shines through—in the intelligence of the décor.
Inspired by some of the best African lodge design, the pair created an exemplary style notable by how restrained it is—something dramatically at odds with what a typical “Moroccan” style is too often guilty of, the dominance of form over content.
